Suspected pipeline vandals on Monday night, stormed the Owutu Police station in Lagos, killing four persons including two policemen and two civilians. They were said to have chased operatives of Nigerian Civil Defense Corp (NSCDC) into the police station at about 10 pm, killed the policemen on guard and carted away about four AK47 rifle from the dead policemen and escaped.
Sources told Daily Sun that trouble started in Oke Oko area of Ikorodu when NSCDC operatives on patrol clashed with the vandals who were operating that night along the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) pipeline within the area.
The patrol team was overpowered by the vandals who chased them out of the area and they ran to the police station for safety. However, unknown to the policemen, the vandals pursued the NSCDC officials to the police station and opened fire on the police men.
Residents, who witnessed the incident told Daily Sun that they thought it was a robbery operation and fled into their homes for safety.
“I was closing up my business for the day when the gun battle started. It was hell because the vandals were heavily armed. They actually gained entrance before they finally left when the gun battle continued. I heard that that they killed two policemen and three civilians including a woman,” the resident stated.
Also, another witness, who resides in Oke Oko said there was heavy shooting in the area at about 9pm between vandals and civil defence operatives. “Those vandals were heavily armed and the shoot-out was terrible. I am quite sure that they killed some civil defence members. It is no news in this area. We leave in fear of any possible attack by these vandals. They chased them out. It was this morning that we learnt that they attacked Owutu police station and killed some policemen.”
It was gathered that the vandals attacked the police station because they were angry that Owutu police men were assisting the NSCDC to disturb their work. “
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, said there was an incident and two policemen were killed in the process. He stated that the police were on the trail of the criminals and would stop at nothing to make them face the wrath of the law.
